Observe protocols while watching parade

To the editor:

If you enjoy watching the Memorial Day parade, keep some protocols in mind.

Hand-held flags must be kept upright by young and old.

When the honor guard approaches with the flag, or you hear the “Star-Spangled Banner,” stop talking and walking. Remove your cap and place your right hand on your heart. Veterans and military in or out of uniform, salute.

As an Army bandsman in Italy, I participated in many a wreath-laying ceremony at enormous military cemeteries that I found chilling to see. Bear in mind that the fighting was there. These events were very solemn.

Here, the rest of Memorial Day is festive and joyful; the parade itself is not. Please be respectful.
