Shapiro, Karetzky to discuss art, writing

NEW PRESTON—Writer Dani Shapiro and painter Laura Karetzky will discuss the creative process, approaches to storytelling, and the themes that drive their work Saturday, Jan. 18, at 5:30 p.m. at Spring Hill Vineyards, 292 Beebrook Rd, New Preston.

Shapiro is the author of 11 books and is the host and creator of the podcast “Family Secrets.” Her most recent novel, “Signal Fires,” was named a best book of 2022 by NPR, Time Magazine, the Washington Post, Amazon and others, and is a national bestseller. 

Her most recent memoir, “Inheritance,” was an instant New York Times Bestseller, and named a best book of 2019 by Elle, Vanity Fair, Wired, and Real Simple. Both “Signal Fires” and “Inheritance” were winners of the National Jewish Book Award. She’s currently developing “Signal Fires” for its television adaptation.

Shapiro’s book on the process and craft of writing, “Still Writing,” has just been reissued on the occasion of its 10th anniversary. She occasionally teaches workshops and retreats and is the co-founder of the Sirenland Writers Conference in Positano, Italy.

Karetzky is a Brooklyn-based visual artist working in painting, ceramic sculpture, printmaking, and video. She earned her MFA from The New York Academy of Art and BFA from Carnegie-Mellon University. Presentations of her work include solo exhibitions with Luis De Jesus in Los Angeles, Dallas Art Fair in Texas, BRIC|Arts Media House in Brooklyn, NY), Jenkins Johnson Gallery in New York, City, and many others.

Maggie Levine began ArtWrite in 2020 to explore the parallels between art and writing. Her Substack, a blend of personal narrative and artist interviews, has garnered an international following of artists, writers, and art lovers. ArtWrite can also be found on Instagram @artwritedaily.
