KENT—A medicinal mushroom walk is planned for Saturday, Sept. 14, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Pond Mountain Natural Area.

The walk will be led by local mushroom expert Dave Paton.

Participants should gather at 120 Fuller Mountain Road, at 10:45 AM. Pre-registration is required.

The event is sponsored by the Twin Star Herbal Education & Community Apothecary of New Milford and is open to all.

Paton, a self-taught mushroom expert, grew up in Sharon and now lives in Salisbury. He has been educating himself about mushrooms since the 1970s and is happy to share his knowledge and expertise.

“Most mushrooms are not poisonous,” he said. “The saying, ‘Eat what you know. If in doubt, throw it out,’ is a good one to abide by.”

He was told as a child that mushrooms don’t have many nutrients, but Paton says that is false and that there are a lot of health benefits from eating mushrooms.
