Library embarks on assessing technology needs in Kent

KENT – Kent Memorial Library is asking the community to fill out a Technology Needs Assessment Survey to help the library better understand the digital landscape and needs of people living in Kent.

“Many community resources, including applying for unemployment assistance, are only available online,” Sarah Marshall, library director, said in a recent email. “Many people either lack the skills or connectivity to access those services.”

The survey is currently available online and on paper, in both English and Spanish.

Residents can fill out the paper version of the survey at the 32 North Main St. library, or request one be mailed to a residence. The survey can also be filled out online as a Google Form.

The goal is for the library to learn how the people of Kent access the digital world and what may stop them from full participation in navigating the internet and computers. This information will help library staff create programs and support patrons.

Marshall further explained that the information gained from the survey will contribute to Kent Memorial Library’s participation in a regional Digital Navigation program that, if funded, will provide shared personnel to help bring people in the Northwest Corner of Connecticut up to speed.

Providing Digital Navigation assistance will ensure that Kent residents can take advantage of critical online resources. Digital Navigators are trusted guides who assist community members with ongoing, individualized support for accessing affordable and appropriate connectivity, devices, and digital skills.
