Knitters cast on in the Reading Room

KENT—A small group of knitters happily discussed projects and stitch variations on Thursday morning, Nov. 21, at the Kent Memorial Library’s Reading Room.

Pixie Brown cast turquoise yarn onto her circular knitting needles, while asking fellow knitter Maddy Collins about the ease of English knitting versus Continental knitting. Brown, of South Kent, praised Collins’ skills.

Collins makes the trek from Torrington every week to meet with the group, which has about eight active members, although attendance varies. Her husband, Norman, drives, then spends the time sketching and talking with the group.

“I have learned to knit, actually,” Norman Collins said with a laugh.

Maddy Collins noted that it is a nice excuse to get out of the house, see friends, and have lunch, often at a restaurant in Kent.

Sandy Jenoure of Amenia, N.Y., said the group originally formed because Nancy Hamilton hosted classes at Black Sheep Yarn, her shop in the Kent Green shopping plaza. The store has since closed, causing them to meet at the library.

Jenoure estimated that the group has been getting together for about 15 years, and it is about more than just knitting. “We have dinners together,” she said with a smile.

The group is open to having new friends join, and even crocheters, too.

It meets at the library, 32 North Main St., on Thursdays at 11:30 a.m.
