Kent News, Inc., the nonprofit publisher of Kent’s trusted independent news source, has reached a milestone transition.
The publication formerly known as The Kent Good Times Dispatch, will now operate as The Kent Dispatch, marking a new era in its commitment to the Kent community.
The streamlined name reflects the organization’s growth as an organization and reinforces its dedication to delivering reliable, in-depth news coverage to Kent’s residents.
“Our rebranding is more than just shortening the name,” said Andrea Schoeny, president of Kent News, Inc. “It’s a reflection of our mission to grow with our readership and deliver impactful stories that keep Kent informed and engaged.”
“As the Kent Dispatch, we’re able to honor our roots while looking ahead to a vibrant future of independent journalism,” she said.
The Kent Dispatch launched digitally Oct. 12, 2023, with its name paying homage to the town’s original Kent Good Times Dispatch newspaper, which was a staple in the community from 1952 to 2009.
Born during the COVID-19 pandemic in response to an expressed need for community-centered news, The Kent Dispatch has quickly established itself as a modern, vital news source for Kent and the surrounding areas.
In just its first year, Kent News, Inc. achieved significant milestones:
- Official 501(c)(3) nonprofit designation in February 2023
- Over $30,000 raised in donations and grants
- A diverse board of lifelong and new Kent residents, including veteran journalists
With these achievements, The Kent Dispatch is positioned to grow sustainably, staying true to the community-focused values that drove its inception.
The Dispatch has grown into Kent’s essential news source:
- 6,000 monthly readers
- 610 newsletter subscribers
- Record civic engagement: Tripled turnout at an affordable housing hearing
- Exclusive local coverage: Delivering stories no other outlet provides
The rebrand comes at a crucial time, as The Kent Dispatch also launches its participation in the NewsMatch 2024 campaign.
From now through Dec. 31, the Institute for Nonprofit News NewsMatch program will match new monthly donations 12 times or double one-time gifts, up to $1,000, making this the perfect time for community members to support Kent’s independent newsroom.
As a nonprofit organization, The Kent Dispatch depends on donations from readers to continue producing the kind of journalism that matters, board members stated.
The community’s support enables the publication to cover critical community issues, report on the outcomes of local elections, and hold public officials accountable for their promises.
NewsMatch donations help ensure that The Kent Dispatch remains a reliable voice for Kent.
“Our commitment to Kent goes beyond headlines,” Schoeny said. “This NewsMatch campaign provides a unique opportunity for readers to become partners in our mission. Every donation, big or small, is crucial to sustaining local journalism in Kent.”
