KENT—A new exhibit, “Only Up a Tree’ is underway at FotoDiary Gallery.
The show at 3 Barn Road will be on display through Nov. 30
Gallery owner and photographer Cedric Gairard said inspiration for the show came from the recently released book by Ryan James Caruthers, “I Thought that I Would be in Heaven but I am Only Up a Tree.”
Caruthers, in turn, was inspired by Caspar David Friedrich’s painting “The Monk by the Sea,” and found himself in a search for self among the trees.
The show, Gairard saidm is an inquiry into the concept of time—the camera recording its subject in a split-second and the forest having potentially infinite lifespans.
“Like the turning of the leaves, the work shown at the gallery will continue to evolve until the end of November,” he promised.
Gairard’s own photographs are on view, which he said “explore the interdependence of humanity’s delicate balance with nature. It reminds us how much trees hold us together—and how climate change impacts all of us.”
In addition to the photographs, works by artist Greg St. John are displayed.
St. John has been drawn to the landscape around him for all his life, referring to landscape of trees, plants, architecture, and objects—a series of abstract marks, values, shapes, and colors.
He said he is fascinated by their interrelationships, how they create movement and rhythms, and how one’s eye absorbs the energy.
As with every show, Gairard has curated a series of books to accompany it, such as “Two American Projects” by Dawoud Bey or “The Seraphim” by Jesse Lenz.
