Forest fire danger ‘extreme,’ caution advised

The danger of forest fires remains high in Litchfield County and residents are advised to continue to avoid open burning.

The risk has been significantly heightened because of the unseasonably warm and dry weather experienced over the past month. As of Thursday, the latest posting by the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, conditions were still listed as “extreme” for Litchfield County.

Local burning permits are not valid if the forest fire danger is rated high, very high or extreme and the permit holder is burning within 100 feet of a grassland or woodland.

Wednesday a Red Flag warning was issued, triggered by a combination of strong winds, low humidity and dry conditions. Winds up to 25 mph are predicted again on Saturday.

Report any fires immediately by dialing 911.
