KENT—The long-promised $2 million in funding for expansion of the Kent Memorial Library was approved by the State Bond Commission Tuesday.
Also approved was $2 million for the Holley Place Affordable Housing Project in Salisbury.
“Several items approved by the Bond Commission today will have a major impact on the Northwest Corner,” said State Representative Maria Horn (D -64), the House chair of the Finance, Revenue, and Bonding Committee.
The grant to Kent Library will help realize plans to expand the library into the adjacent former firehouse, creating needed community spaces at the library, returning the firehouse to public use, and increasing the vitality of the business district on Main Street in Kent.
“It’s excellent news for Kent and Salisbury,” said State Senator Stephen Harding (R -30). “The funds for Kent Memorial Library pay dividends the town for years to come. The money to advance affordable housing opportunities in Salisbury is a testament to the hard work of residents and volunteers throughout the town.”
The State Bond Commission approved all the projects on its agenda.

Outstanding news. The Kent Memorial library is one of the most significant cultural entities in the town. I so benefited from using it durning my childhood in Kent.
The planned incorporation of the former firehouse into the library’s footprint is such an excellent use of the firehouse. Its addition to the library space will always allow me to visit my temporary school room – following the fire at the Kent Center School. I look forward to once again climbing up the stairs to the second floor! David Byrnes, Portland, Oregon
