NEW MILFORD—The Merryall Center will present “Birds: In Art, Science, and Song” in collaboration with Connecticut Audubon Society’s Deer Pond Farm Saturday, Sept. 28, at 4 p.m.
This event will celebrate the work of Merryall’s 2024 artist-in-residence, Dori Petrochko, whose paintings include local and exotic birds, and the connections with artists that are regularly supported at Deer Pond Farm in Sherman.
Representatives from Deer Pond Farm, Cathy Hagadorn, director, and Lori Lichtenauer, sanctuary manager/naturalist, will discuss current and historical conservation work in this area, information on some of the local bird species and what can be done to support them.
Part of the presentation will focus on how to look and listen like a naturalist. Their talk will feature examples of bird songs, some of which will connect directly to Petrochko’s work.
Dori Petrochko is an award-winning artist, whose work focuses on birds and the importance of conservation. She has long been connected with Connecticut Audubon; indeed, her work is part of their permanent collections. Petrochko’s work has been featured in Sidney, Australia, the Yale Peabody Museum, and this fall she will have an installation at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute in Jamestown, NY. The collection currently on display at the Merryall Center includes 45 paintings, as well as several prints, cards and puzzles, all available for purchase.
This event will include a video in which Petrochko describes her approach to her work, after which the audience is invited to take a closer look at the paintings and join in a wine and cheese reception.

Attendees should be aware of the summer-long Merryall Road bridge closure. If traveling to the Center on West Meetinghouse Road, follow the clearly-marked detour signs to Tamarack Road which leads to Chapel Hill Road and Merryall Center at 8 Chapel Hill Rd.
