Sherman Playhouse Announces Auditions for “Habeas Corpus”

SHERMAN—The Sherman Players will hold auditions Jan. 28 and 29 for its spring production of “Habeas Corpus,” written by Alan Bennett and directed by Dan Friedman. The play will be produced by Jessica Durdock Moreno.

Family, friends and the sexual satisfaction of the “corpus” (body) are the ruling passions in this farcical comedy of ill-manners, according to the theater’s officials.

First performed in 1973 starring Alec Guinness, Bennett takes the traditional British farce to the extreme.

Auditions Jan. 28 will be held from 3 to 5 p.m., with Jan. 29’s session from 6 to 8:30 p.m., both at The Sherman Playhouse, 5 Route 39 North. Appointments are not necessary. Sign in will be in the Green Room at the rear of the playhouse.

Performance dates will be April 5-27.

There are roles for five women and six men: Arthur Wicksteed (50s), a lecherous general practitioner; Muriel Wicksteed (40s-50s), his assertive wife; Dennis Wicksteed (20s), their son, a wimpish hypochondriac frustrated by his lack of a girlfriend; Constance Wicksteed (40s-50s) the doctor’s scrawny spinster sister; Mrs. Swabb (any age), a cleaning lady; Canon Throbbing (any age) a celibate eager to abandon his vows; Lady Rumpers (40s and older), a returning aristocratic expatriate who cares only for her daughter’s welfare; Felicity Rumpers (20s), her daughter who elicits lust from men who meet her; Mr. Shanks (any age), a sales representative; Sir Percy Shorter (50s and older) a leading light in the medical profession, once Muriel’s paramour and Wicksteed’s nemesis, and Mr. Purdue (any age), a sick man.

Actors of all races, ethnicities and gender identifications are encouraged to audition.
