Format & Rules for First Selectman Candidate Debate

The format of the debate was agreed upon in advance by the three candidates, Rufus DeRham, Martin Lindenmayer and Lynn Mellis Worthington.

Each candidate will each have an opportunity to give a two-minute opening statement (the order was drawn by lots).

Each candidate will have two minutes to answer the question posed by the moderator and there will be a chance for a 30-second rebuttal by candidates.

Note: the three candidates will answer questions in rotation so that each candidate can speak first, second and third during each three-question segment of the evening (9 questions total).

Each candidate will have two minutes for a closing statement in reverse order of the opening statements.

A minimum of two individuals, who have been appointed by Kent News, Inc., will serve as timekeepers.

Suggested debate questions were solicited in advance. Only the moderator and a representative of Kent News, Inc., had access to the questions. Similar questions were consolidated and questions that were not relevant to issues in town were excluded.

The debate is being recorded and will be available for future viewing.

There will be no audience participation at town hall or for those watching via Zoom.

With respect for time and fluidity of the debate, all audience responses should be held until the conclusion of the debate.
