KENT—South Kent School observed the raucous Halloween holiday in a more somber way.
The Earth Science class visited St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church cemetery in town to clean gravestones in preparation for All Souls’ and All Saints’ Day, which are recognized Nov. 2 and Nov. 1, respectively.
The event, inspired by the school’s annual traditions and integrated with the class’ unit on erosion and weathering, gave students hands-on learning as they worked to clean three gravestones belonging to a local family, with the family’s permission.
Before and after the cleaning, students took detailed notes on the gravestones’ condition, bringing a scientific element to the work and deepening their understanding of weathering and erosion.
The South Kent community collaborated closely to make this event possible, with support from the school’s STEM faculty member Michelle Borsavage, the soccer team, health center, facilities and Sage Dining Services providing necessary supplies.
The local Kent community was also instrumental, with assistance from Brent Kallstrom, Kent’s cemetery sexton, the Cemetery Commission and Kent Town Hall staff. All helped to organize the day.
