Seniors enjoy meal preparation program

KENT – Seniors in town are enjoying food creation through the Make It Take It program offered each month at the Kent Senior Center.

Social Services Assistant Director Rosemary Jones and Elaine Donahue, who teaches the chair yoga course, teamed up to come up with the idea.

“We thought it would be fun,” Jones said.

Each month she tests the recipes before the instruct the seniors in their preparation. “I try to do the recipes ahead of time,” she said, explaining that sometimes tweaks are needed to adjust amounts of spices or other ingredients.

The seniors help with the meal preparation and then sit down to enjoy the meal. Finally, they take some home for another meal.

“It’s great to be out,” said Anne Lacey about the opportunity on April 11.

Donahue shared how important it is for seniors to socialize and that food really brings people out to a program.

That day the menu included a Chinese style Chicken Stir Fry with mushrooms and snow peas in a teriyaki sauce, green salad and apple crisp. Participants wanted to make sure that Jones would be providing them with copies of both recipes. As they waited for the food to cook, they chatted about previous recipes they’d made.

The next Make It Take It program will be May 1 at 11 a.m. and the following month it will be June 12 at 11 a.m. The schedule of upcoming Senior Center programs can be seen online in the newsletter. Registration is limited to the first eight people who signup by emailing ssassist@townofkentct.org or by calling 860-927-2055
