Reading programs for all ages beginning at library

KENT—Kent Memorial Library, 32 North Main St., wants everyone to get out and read this summer—from the tiniest tot to the long-retired senior citizen—and June is the month when it launches its summer reading programs for everyone.

Thursday, June 13, the Summer Adult Reading program begins, encouraging older readers to “Begin your Adventure with a Book.” Adults register at the library and pick up their “passports.” They then read a book (or listen to an audiobook) set in or written by an author from each continent: North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia or Antarctica. Or perhaps they prefer a book about outer space or the oceans.

For each book read, they get their passports stamped at the library and earn a raffle ticket to win a gift basket full of traveler’s essentials. Fill the passport with stamps and earn a $10 gift certificate redeemable at the library’s book sale. They can earn as many stamps as they want and “double dip” if the book takes place on multiple continents.

Raffle ticket drawings for the gift baskets will be on Monday, July 22, and Thursday, Aug. 22.

Summer Program for Teens & Tweens

The summer reading program for Teens & Tweens begins with a kick-off party Tuesday, June 18 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Attendance at this event for youngsters entering grades 5 and up only counts for one point towards the summer’s eight-point goal. Registration is appreciated by calling 860-927-3761 or emailing.

Younger Readers

Children of all ages are welcome Friday, June 21, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., at the Summer Reading Kick-Off Party. Come by the Junior Room to learn more about all the events and activities the library has to offer this summer during “Adventure Begins at Your Library.”

A BINGO sheet will be available for pickup, the children will do a craft, have a snack and play some games.

Registration for Library Camp for kids entering K-4th grade (parents must register for each individual week and space is limited) will be held at the party by calling or emailing the Junior Room after June 18.

Library Camp is held each Wednesday in July from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Junior Room and is a drop-off program for children entering grades K-4. There will be stories, games, crafts, snacks, special guests and more.
