New transfer station rules go into effect Saturday

KENT—As of this weekend, all Kent Transfer Station users must have a 2024-25 permit (purple) and orange bags for household garbage.

Anyone not using orange bags will have the ability to purchase their permits and bags at the station this coming weekend so that they may dispose of their household garbage in accordance with the new system guidelines.

This change only effects household waste disposal. All other processes, including recycling and bulky waste, will remain the same.

Permits and the needed materials are also available to be purchased at Town Hall in the Selectmen’s Office. They will also be sold at the Transfer Station Saturday and Sunday 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Cash, check and credit cards will be accepted.

The town has transitioned to a Unit-based Pricing and Organic Food Scrap collection system, making users responsible for the amount of trash they generate. The cost of permits have been reduced, but residents must purchase town-issued trash bags. The cost of the bag covers the cost of disposal per user.

Users will be able to choose how many bags they wish to purchase with their permit and may purchase additional rolls of bags throughout the year. Bags are available in various sizes.

Transfer Station permits cost $50 for all residents. An organics-only permit (for non-permit holders/curbside users only) is $20. A food scrap collection kit (six-gallon carry container, 1.5-gallon kitchen bin and two rolls of biobags) is $20.

There is a $25 fee for replacement hangtags.
