LITCHFIELD, Conn.—There will be a “Light for Our Democracy” rally on the Litchfield Green Tuesday night at 8:30 p.m. A moment of silence will be observed at 9 o’clock.

It is hosted by the Litchfield Chapter of the League of Women Voters to bring people together in reflection, action and solidarity during the President’s address to Congress. In a statement, the organization said, “This event will offer a peaceful and unified space to come together for the health of our democracy, the future of our nation, and the well-being of all its people.”
The League of Women Voters USA is one of the sponsoring organizations for the nationwide rally and the local chapter in Litchfield Country encourages anyone who is feeling discouraged by the lack of checks and balances in Washington, who understands the U.S. Constitution to be under attack, or who understands that the democratic process authorizes the U.S. Congress to control the purse strings, to gather on the Litchfield Green.
“Democracy is not just a system of government—it’s the power of the people,” the chapter said in a statement. “It begins with us, our voices, and our votes. At a time when democracy is under threat, we’re asking you— and folks across the country— to come together to defend it.”
Participants should dress for the weather and bring a candle or small light (and perhaps one to share). People are also encouraged to craft signs from recycled cardboard carrying one of the following messages: Light 4 Our Democracy; March 4 Our Democracy; Check and Balances, or Power of the Purse—Congress.
Nationwide sponsoring organizations of the Light For Our Democracy rallies are the League of Women Voters, Black Voters Matter, the Workers Circle, the American Association of People with Disabilities, National Organization for Women, American Federation of Teachers, Southern Poverty Law Center, Common Cause, National Council of Jewish Women, APIA Vote, Center for Common Ground, Declaration for American Democracy, Public Citizen, Defend the Vote, Fix Democracy First, Fourth Branch Action, Unitarian Universalists for Social Justice, Americans United for Separation of Church and State, and Choose Democracy.
