KENT—It’s only a hop, skip and a jump from Kent to the New York state border and the Harlem Valley, a region with an eclectic history that ranges from a Victorian utopian community that claimed to see fairies to an early version of the “Borscht Belt” that once flourished on the shores of Lake Amenia.
Author Tonia Shoumatoff, who has captured these stories in “Historic Tales of the Harlem Valley: Life at the End of the Line,” will speak about her book Thursday, July 11, at 6 p.m. in a free program at the Kent Memorial Library, 32 North Main St.
Shoumatoff is a writer, producer and media commentator with a longtime professional commitment to environmental protection. She has lived in the Harlem Valley since 1987. Her work as senior reporter for the Millbrook Independent newspaper gave her a perspective on local affairs and the area’s rich history.
