KENT—Christmas is the time of year that produces the most municipal solid waste. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average household produces up to a quarter more waste between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day.
This extra trash amounts to roughly 25 million tons of garbage nationwide between excess packaging, wrapping paper, boxes and food waste.
Locally, Kent has urged reduction of the amount of its municipal solid waste through recycling, but, in this instance, it is advising residents that wrapping and tissue paper, ribbon and decorated boxes all go into “garbage.” Do not include them with recyclable items.
