KENT—One team from Marvelwood School has placed first in the state’s Envirothon competition and will continue its competition in New York state next month.

Laurie Doss, chair of the Marvelwood School Science Department, said this week she will be traveling in July to support one of the school’s two Envirothon teams, of which she is a co-advisor.

She posted on Facebook that she is “…so proud of all 10 students from Marvelwood School who represented at the state Envirothon Competition in late May.  Two teams, from a school of about 125 students, managed to more than hold their own against much larger schools. Both teams earned top-10 finishes!”

Doss said that Team #1 finished in sixth place overall and Team #2 “pulled off a stunning upset and secured their overall first place finish with wins in Wildlife and the Current Issue.”  This team will represent the state of Connecticut at the NCF-Envirothon Competition in Geneva, NY July 28 through Aug. 4.  “Students are looking forward to meeting teams from at least 41 other states, China, Singapore, and Canada at the event,” Doss wrote.

Envirothon is an international environmental and natural resource problem-solving competition that builds leadership experience for high school students. Students expand their knowledge and explore environmental education and natural resource conservation through the competitions. This year’s “current issue” topic is Renewable Energy for a Sustainable Future.

Doss said that she is grateful to her co-advisor, Emilie Arseneault, and all of the past Marvelwood Envirothon team participants for laying the groundwork for the success of Marvelwood teams, especially these past four years.
