DOVER PLAINS, NY—Brendan Philip Cooney, 83, a longtime Dover Plains resident who spent much time in Kent, died on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at his home.

Born on March 15, 1941, in Flushing, NY, he was the son of the late James and Catherine (Carberry) Cooney. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army and served as a military policeman during the Vietnam War. He was an avid supporter of all service men and women, he held them and the American Flag in the highest regard.

Cooney was an installer for Lucent Technologies in New York City for many years.

He was a parishioner of St. Charles Borromeo Church in Dover Plains, and frequently attended mass at St. Joseph’s Church in Millbrook, as well as Sacred Heart in Kent. He supported Catholic missionaries from around the world, as well as supporting many local parishes. Over the years, he formed many lasting friendships with clergy members and parishioners.

He is survived by his wife, Rita Henneberger Cooney of Wingdale, NY; a son, Matthew Cooney of Dover Plains, and two daughters, Kerry Cooney and her partner, William Yeno IV of Dover Plains, and Megan Langton and her husband, Robert Langton, Jr. of Millbrook. He is also survived by a sister, Claire Ann Cooney of Hackettstown, NJ; three grandchildren, Jonathan Zimlinghaus, Madison Yeno and Mazzy Langton and a great grandchild, Navail Zimlinghaus. He will be missed by his canine companions, Larry and Charlie. 
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, at Hufcut Funeral Home, 3159 Route 22, Dover Plains. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 14, at St. Charles Borromeo Church, Mill St., Dover Plains. Burial with military honors will follow at the Veterans’ Section at St. Charles Cemetery in Dover Plains.
