WARREN—Registration if now open for the 40th annual Lake Waramaug Polar Bear Run, which is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 23, at 11 a.m. This annual winter tradition is limited to 700 runners.
The run is organized and sponsored by TrailHeads, a Kent-based online retailer of hats, headbands and gloves for runners and is powered by a team of more than 75 volunteers. A 501 C (3) registered nonprofit, the race raises both awareness of and money for Guiding Eyes for the Blind, an organization that raises and trains guide dogs to partner with blind or visually impaired people. Donations from race proceeds have totaled more than $34,800 to date and it is hoped that this year the organization will surpass its next milestone of $40,000 in total donations.
The run is a 7.8 mile loop of Lake Waramaug that traverses portions of Washington, Warren and Kent. The route is primarily flat with a few gentle, rolling hills. The final .2 miles provides a true test for all as runners ascend Hopkins Hill to the finish line at Hopkins Vineyard.
The top three male and female finishers receive prizes. First place overall wins a $100 TrailHeads gift card and a bottle of wine from Hopkins Vineyard. Age group awards are presented for the top three in each category.
Kent Falls Brewing Company, 33 Camps Rd, will host a celebratory “Post Polar Beer” to cap off the race. The brewery is a 10-minute drive from the start/finish line. Runners can kick back and relax in the tasting room and enjoy flights of the latest beer releases.
