Letters to the Editor Policy

The Kent Good Times Dispatch (KGTD) welcomes letters to the editor if the submissions are not in bad taste and refrain from attacking individuals without supporting documentation or a rational and legally defensible justification. The newspaper reserves the sole discretion to decide whether a reader submission will be published.

In the future, two issues prior to election day, readers will not see new political letters to the editor. The only exception would be publishing letters in response to those written prior to the period; those letters must not bring to light new issues. These deadlines are designed to protect the integrity of the election by prohibiting letters that could contain misleading or false accusations that could ultimately affect voters’ decisions should a candidate not have the opportunity to respond.

Candidates cannot use this space for campaigning.

If a letter is selected it will be run on a single occasion and the sender grants the right to publish it in print and digital form. The KGTD will not accept letters that are duplicated, reprinted, copied or otherwise reproduced. Letters should not exceed 300 words; those exceeding this length may be edited and may not be published in their entirety.

The KGTD does not print form letters. Letters must include a full name, complete address and telephone number. Addresses and phone numbers will be used only for verification and will not be published.

Unsigned letters and letters containing personal attacks the newspaper deems to be of a libelous nature will not be published. All columns and letters on the opinion page are the views of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of the KGTD.
